Call for Papers - Special Issue
Location Analytics: Shaping the Future of IS Education

The Journal of Information Systems Education (JISE) invites submissions for a Special Issue titled “Location Analytics: Shaping the Future of IS Education” expected to be published in middle 2026.

Geospatial Technology is a rapidly growing field that intersects with diverse disciplines, notably Information Systems (IS). Integrating spatial data analysis into IS curricula offers an excellent opportunity to enhance students' analytical capabilities, equipping them to address intricate, location-centric challenges in business and societal contexts. This special issue aims to gather high-quality research that explores innovative approaches to teaching geospatial analytics within IS education, the challenges and opportunities associated with integrating these technologies into curricula, and the impact on students' learning outcomes. A timely recent publication further emphasizes how location analytics can shape the future of IS education (Erskine et al., 2024).

The adoption of geospatial analytics in IS education is on the rise, with some business schools even offering dedicated courses on this topic. Despite this growing interest, IS educators frequently face challenges accessing specific teaching resources tailored to their field. They often resort to materials from other disciplines, such as environmental science or epidemiology. This special issue addresses this gap by offering IS educators practical, discipline-specific teaching cases and examples. We encourage submissions that cover practical approaches to integrating geospatial analytics into IS curricula, effective pedagogical strategies for teaching location-based problem-solving, teaching tips, and innovative case studies that illustrate real-world applications of these technologies. By focusing on these areas, we hope to provide valuable resources to enhance geospatial education's quality and relevance within IS programs. Specific topics of interest include but not limited to are:

  • Designing a location analytics curriculum: Frameworks and best practices for developing a comprehensive curriculum.
  • Case studies of successful integration: Lessons learned from institutions that have effectively integrated geospatial analytics.
  • Pedagogical approaches for teaching location analytics: Innovative teaching methods and strategies.
  • Assessment methods for location analytics skills: Techniques for evaluating proficiency and application.
  • Industry collaboration in location analytics education: Examples of academic-industry partnerships enhancing education.
  • Leveraging GIS software in IS courses: Best practices for incorporating location analytics tools and software.
  • Ethical considerations in location analytics: Exploring privacy concerns and data management practices.
  • Location analytics for business decision-making: Using analytics to inform strategies and optimize operations.
  • Developing interactive learning tools for location analytics: Creating engaging and interactive learning tools.
  • Challenges and solutions in geospatial data integration: Addressing and overcoming integration challenges in IS projects.
  • GeoAI applications in location analytics: Exploring the role of artificial intelligence in geospatial analysis.
  • Geospatial data science methodologies: Techniques and tools for analyzing and interpreting geospatial data.
