The Guest Editors of the Journal of Information Systems Education (JISE) invite submissions for a special issue on Flexible Teaching and Learning to appear in the October 2007 (Vol. 18 No. 3) issue.

The IS teaching and learning community has seen substantial upheaval in recent times. Falling enrolments, coupled with fluctuating business and student requirements, heightened competition in the tertiary education sector and substantial technological development, have significantly affected IS teaching and research departments around the world.

These developments constitute an opportunity for IS educators to revisit the foundations of learning and teaching in the discipline, with a view to increasing flexibility of teaching, learning and delivery. Flexibility, in this sense, can relate to any of the following aspects of learning:

  • Assessment
  • Mode
  • Pace and intensity
  • Timing
  • Location
  • Content

For this special issue of JISE on Flexible Learning and Teaching, we invite the submission of high-quality, innovative, and insightful articles. Possible topics include but are not limited to:

  • Innovatively engaging with students
  • Alternative teaching and learning models (including alternatives to conventional lectures)
  • Thinking flexibly about the future IS learning community
  • Responding to changes in student information literacy and expectations
  • Responding to changes in IS enrolments
  • Using games to illustrate concepts, or to help students retain lesson messages outside the classroom.
  • The use and effect of computer games in the classroom
  • Case studies of flexible education
  • Using new technology to enhance student experiences
  • Philosophical issues in flexible teaching and learning
